We have an unintentional tradition in our family. I don’t think anyone knew that it would catch on like it actually has. You see, I have a grandmother whose name was Elizabeth.
My mother’s name is Rachel.
My first name is actually Elizabeth.
My daughter’s name is Rachel.
My granddaughter’s middle name is… you guessed it, Elizabeth.
I guess it is just indicative of our southern roots. And clearly my granddaughter will have no choice but to include Rachel in her daughter’s name one day. If she only has boys, I don’t know what will happen!
As much as we can rely on the traditions passed down through the generations of our families, there is something else that we can rely on even more.
That is the heart of God. The Psalmist says,
…the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.Psalm 33:11
His plans will not be thwarted. His purposes can be trusted. His heart is goodness towards us.
Every day. Every year. Through all generations.
Now that is a tradition that will never change.
What traditions have been passed down in your family?
Thanks for creating community here with us! The Big Red Sofa Series is about the things I see in life that make me go hmmmm. The ordinary things that God can use to drive home spiritual lessons. The questions I sometimes ask. The stories we can all share. So pull up a cushion and join me on the sofa. I’d love to hear from you!
