Welcome to the Big Red Sofa. I’m glad you joined us for a chat today!

I read a couple of articles in the last few weeks that really hit hard. One was about a kid who started a lemonade stand to fund his own adoption. Sold lemonade to become part of a family. Sold. Lemonade.

The second one was a picture post about kids who had been adopted and on the day their adoptions were final, they took photos holding up signs listing how many days they had been in foster care. When the teenage boy flashed on the screen with a sign that he had been in foster care for more than 1000 days, I lost it. One thousand days. Without stability, without family, waiting.

Thank goodness for the mama who helped her boy sell lemonade so they could legally become a family. Thank God for the families who adopted these precious children who had been waiting so long. But there are so many more like them. Waiting.

And foster kids aren’t the only people suffering the injustices of a fallen world, waiting on someone to help them.

So I wonder…does our silence in an unjust world allow others to continue suffering? I’m not just asking you…I’m asking myself too. Suffering in this world is the result of evil. It’s not our fault per se, but if we are not doing what we can do to alleviate suffering, are we contributing to it? These are just things I wonder.

This verse keeps coming back around in different applications lately. The apostle John wrote,

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. I John 4:18

Surely the Holy Spirit calls on us to help the poor and lonely, the needy and disenfranchised, the hurting and grieving. So the question becomes how is He calling us in particular…and how will we answer? I think we don’t answer sometimes because we are afraid. I know I am…afraid of being rejected, afraid of the unknown, afraid of…of…of what? I don’t always know.

But what I do know is that we have nothing to fear when we love God enough to love others.

So the question I’m left with is what will I do to help others?
