I love to read. Books, magazines, the back of cereal boxes. It doesn’t matter. I love to read. Period.

This love began in elementary school when I learned to read and books opened up whole new worlds to me. You can see in the picture above that the love continues today. This is the stack of books on my bedside table. And that doesn’t count the books on my iPad and nook and Kindle apps.

So many books…not enough time.

By late elementary and middle school, I could while away hours in a day engrossed in a world that was nothing like mine. Not that my world was bad, mind you. I had a loving family and lots of friends. But my internal voices were filled with fear and self-doubt. Books quieted those voices and took me to places and lives I could only dream about.

If I were to talk to that book-loving child and teen today, I would tell her,

  • You are as good and kind and heroic as any character in the well-worn and dog-eared novels you love so much. God made you just the way He wanted you to be, so embrace that reality now.
  • Life may not seem as exciting as that of our favorite heroes. But honestly, any day spent in the presence of Jesus will be more than we can ask or imagine.
  • Books are wonderful…and keep on reading. Just spend at least an equal amount of time reading the one Book that can make an eternal impact on your life.
I don’t have any specific statistics on child literacy or children who own books in third world countries. But we all know that the stats aren’t good. Children who

live in staggering poverty often don’t have the opportunity to learn to read and have even less opportunity to own books.

Compassion International works to make a difference in the lives of these children. Education and literacy, nutrition and medical support, combined with the knowledge that someone cares about them all contribute to the success of child sponsorship
Imagine the delight of a child who learns to read and then reads books about things they could only imagine before. Imagine being able to tell your sponsored child that they are as good and kind and heroic as any character they could read about. Imagine being part of opening up the world of literacy to a child who otherwise wouldn’t have such an opportunity.
Imagine the eternal impact on the life of a child who hears about Jesus and then learns to read the very word of God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-2 and 14
You can be part of bringing the Word to life in the mind of an impoverished child by sponsoring a child today.
