I spent the holiday weekend with my daughter and her family in Georgia. I gotta say that Georgia at the end of August is absolutely sweltering. There are some definite advantages to living in the mountains.  Not gonna lie.

Since my granddaughter turned ONE in June, we thought it’d be a good time to take some pictures to mark the occasion. Like most young moms, my daughter loves to have updated pictures of her children. I’m only too happy to oblige as the photographer.

It’s also put me in mind of what I would want Cambrie to hear from me…what are some of the life lessons I think are important for girls growing up today to know. So here’s a letter I would share with her on the Big Red Sofa:

Dear precious granddaughter,

I love you more than life itself. Your laughter brings great joy to my soul. And you remind me so much of your sweet mother. As you grow, I pray that you remember these three things…

You are beautiful. You are the exact person God made you to be. Grab hold of who you are and never let anyone talk you out of it. You can be confident in being you.

The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. Psalm 45:11

You are loved. By your parents. By your grandparents. By God. You never have to wonder if you are worth loving because we already love you. You never have to wonder if we are withholding good things from you because all we want is the best for you.

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:9-11

You are going to do great things. Or you are going to be great at doing ordinary things. Either way, we’ll be watching and cheering you on as you grow into the woman you will be one day. And whatever you do will be magnificent because those things can only be done by you in your own unique way.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

Cambrie, I love you all the way around the world and back again.

Much love from YaYa

We want so much for our children as they grow. I think that’s especially true for our daughters and granddaughters. My grandmothers wanted me to learn these lessons and more! So I’m sure there is more that I’ll want to share with Cambrie as the years go by. Prayerfully, she will learn the lessons sooner and better than I did.

In the meantime, maybe a letter a year is a good tradition to start. The years fly by so quickly that we have to mark them in pictures and words so we won’t forget! This grandma ain’t gettin’ any younger!

What words would you give your grandchildren?

Thanks for creating community here with us! The Big Red Sofa Series is about the things I see in life that make me go hmmmm. What God teaches me in scripture. The ordinary things that God can use to drive home spiritual lessons. The questions I sometimes ask. The stories we can all share. So pull up a cushion and join me on the sofa. I’d love to hear from you!
