A Text Message
I got this text last week from my pastor…
I find myself getting excited about the possibilities of you at our church once you move here.
Being the always inquisitive and somewhat snarky person that I am, I replied…
Oh yeah? What’s going on in that brain of yours that you are going to rope me into doing? 🙂
I didn’t have anything in mind…I just love future possibilities…I’m sure God will show us.
Hoping Against Hope!
In Mark chapter 9, the writer tells a story of Jesus healing a demon-possessed boy. The boy’s father has brought the child to Jesus and is in an argument with some disciples and the teachers of the law. The argument frustrated Jesus as he calls them an unbelieving generation and then asks for the man to tell him about the child.
Jesus asked the boy’s father, ‘How long has he been like this?’
‘From childhood,’ he answered. ‘It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.’
‘If you can’?’ said Jesus. ‘Everything is possible for one who believes.’
In a last act of desperation, the father brings his son to the person he’s heard all the buzz and hype about. Hoping against hope that something can finally be done for his boy.
Oh the Possibilities!
And Jesus tells the father that everything is possible for one who believes. He doesn’t say some things. Nor does he say the things that are said in just the right way. No, he says everything is possible for one who believes.
The testimony today is that the possibilities of God are endless.
I don’t know what God has in store for me as I move and make myself at home with another church family. But the lesson this text message taught me is that God knows. The possibilities of what he will do in the future should excite and inspire me. And he will definitely show me those possibilities…I just have to be ready to believe and embrace them.
