I don’t know about you, but I love to play games. My family are big game players and we always have some kind of tournament going when we are all together. Rummikub, Phase 10, Rook, Dominoes, Pegs ‘n Jokers, Scrabble, Sorry and the list goes on. This weekend for Memorial Day, we will be together for my grandson’s 1st birthday party. I’m hoping some games will ensue.
Well, except for Monopoly. My mom loves Monopoly but no one in the family will play with her anymore. Of course, that is because she is absolutely ruthless! She plays to win, has no mercy on anyone who owes her money, and obliterates everyone else on the board. Every time. I am not kidding.
Two phrases you will often hear when our family is together are, “Let’s play something!” and “I hate this game!” The first one means grab a drink and a snack, the game is on! The second one is uttered by anyone who is losing…particularly my father!
If I remember correctly, the last time we played a game, it was Rummikub and I won! Not that I would rub that in or anything! We can be pretty competitive so we’ve even had to institute the use of a timer because no one ever wants their turn to end.
My mom has a video blog on Gray Hair Talking about having fun and she talks about our family’s love of games.
The testimony here is that we all need to have a little fun. Life can be hard sometimes and days can feel overwhelming. But we gotta set aside all of that on occasion and just have some fun. Gather your people…make some good food…laugh a lot. It’s probably one of the most refreshing things we can do.
This context of this Psalm is when the Israelites are brought out of captivity,
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
But, I think we can apply it to ourselves today. Regardless of how difficult life is some days. We can still laugh and enjoy friends and family. We can have fun and be filled with joy.
