I’m sitting in a cottage of teenage girls tonight. It is my 15th day working in the last 16. And there are two full days to go before a blessed 4-day weekend. It’s been an intense time of handling people, processes, incidents, and emotions. And really, intense is just the tip of the iceberg.

It feels like everything is fraying around the edges. As if there’s nothing more that a mind, a heart, a team can absorb. Self-care seems like a distant memory.

Frankly, you don’t have to work in ministry to feel this way. The everyday of life can stand your hair on end all by itself. So that our souls cry out for a time away. A time of refreshment. A time of connection.

Jesus invites us all,

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

I love the phrase “unforced rhythms of grace.” It’s important for us to learn to bring things to our Father and to trust that He is taking care of those things.

It’s also important for us to learn to make time for these rhythms in our every day life. We can’t live forever at a high state of alert. We need to find the ebb and flow of rest and activity that keeps us from burning out.

We’ll have some time to just be. And we’ll have some time to learn. I’m certain there will be plenty of laughing and lots of chocolate.

What more could you ask for?

Oh yeah, options. You can come on Friday and stay until Sunday. Or if you are in the area, you can come just for the day activities on Saturday.

If you are part of the Five Minute Friday crew, we’d love to have you join us. You can buy your tickets here—>

So, are you a writer that needs a little downtime? Join us for the FMF Retreat in August. You’ll be glad you did!

And if you’re not a writer, share an idea in the comments below about how you balance all the priorities of your life while taking care of yourself.

What’s your best self-care tip?
